Vayala Vasudevan പിള്ളൈ-

Theatre personality Vayala Vasudevan Pillai died at a private hospital here on Monday. He was 67.

Prof. Vasudevan Pillai had been undergoing treatment for cancer at the hospital since August 5, hospital sources said. He is survived by wife, Valsala.

Popularly known as ‘Vayala Sir,' Prof. Vasudevan Pillai had served as director of the School of Drama in Thrissur for over two decades. A disciple of playwright G. Sankara Pillai, he was selected for the Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2009 for his contributions to Malayalam theatre.

Some of the his popular plays include Viswadarsanam (1977), Thulaseevaram (1979), Agni (1982), Rangabhasha (1984), Varavelpu (1985), Kuchelagadha (1988), The Death of Nestling (1992), Suthradhara, Ethile... Ethile? (1993), Kunji Chirakukal (1994), and Swarnakokkukal (1999)

T.M. Abraham, vice-chairman, Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi, said here that the body would be taken to Prof. Vasudevan Pillai's residence at Ayanthole in Thrissur. It will be kept on the akademi premises on Tuesday morning for the public to pay their homage. The cremation will be held at Cheruthuruthy on the banks of the Bharathapuzha in the afternoon.
